We’ve decided on the best song by one of the absolute greatest bands of all time. A difficult choice. And it’s not a Brian Wilson composition. It was written by Bruce Johnston for the 1971 album Surfs Up. Bruce was a Beach Boy for a time (replacing Glen Campbell) and had a long career writing and producing after he left the group. Check out these two bits of his history: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bruce+johnston and https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bruce+johnston
Never heard this song. Nice lyrics and very interesting music. Not sure I have ever heard a WAWA pedal used in slow tempo song before. Not a typical Beach Boys song.
The Jury is still out as I am not sure I agree with “The Management Team” on this one.
I did find a solo recording of this by Bruce Johnston with only piano accompaniment and liked it better.
My vote is for God Only Knows, as the best Beach Boys Song.
On a side note, I didn’t know Glen Campbell was a member of The Beach Boys.
Thanks, Kasey. “God Only Knows” would be high on the list of favorites, too. Glen Campbell left the Boys when his solo career was taking off – he clearly had the beach look in his early days and, spoiler alert, may show up on the Top 100 at some point. The documentary made of his last days performing as he suffered with developing Alzheimers is tremendous. Bring tissues.
Thanks for your blog, nice to read. Do not stop.
